tEEN SUMMER CHALLENGE

How many times have you started the summer with a chore chart, activity list, reading schedule only to have it in the can by week 2? Summer brings lots of excitement and a lacking of structure, and that is OK! That said, what if these simple tasks were key to not only a successful in life, but a routine you’ll long for come August. Here are five daily habits to incorporate into your summer routines (and beyond!) that will not only help add structure to your days, but also keep your child's brain and body at work.

1. Non-negotiable: MAKE YOUR BED. I tell my kids (and I'll be honest, I get an eye-roll every now and then) that making their bed will not only immediately give them a sense of accomplishment, but it is a gift they give themselves that they cannot deny appreciating at the end of a long day.

2. Exercise: We ALL know exercise is important. But, without clear direction on what to do, it becomes even greater of a task (kids and adults alike). Check back here to the blog each week day this summer for a WORKOUT OF THE DAY you can not only hand off to your teen, but do yourself as well! To start, here are 3 - 20 minute work-out ideas perfect for kids and teens that will get them moving, lift their spirits and set some groundwork for some physical goals.

3. Gratitude or Goal/Passion Journal (3-5 items a day can be incredibly impactful on your child's mindset). There are the obvious benefits, like a boost in mindfulness, memory and communication skills. But studies have also found that writing in a journal can lead to better sleep, a stronger immune system, more self-confidence and a higher I.Q.

4. 20 Minutes of Reading Check your local library for a reading incentive program. Also, check out this Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Incentive Program. Reading will no only keep kids excited about learning, but research shows it is incredibly impactful in preventing academic slide over summer.

5. Meal Plan (yes, you can give this task to your kids!). A bonus of putting your child in charge of pre-planning their day in meals is that it will significantly decrease their pantry grazing/mindless snacking. It doesn’t have to be complicated (think sandwiches) or with too many boundaries, but on protein and greens should be encouraged! Another option is to put your tween/teen in charge of dinner one night a week. They'll love the freedom in the kitchen.
